The second week of the Olympics begins and it is time for me
to start my second sock.  And, in fact, I
did start the second sock last night.
Not that I have finished the first sock.
But I decided that it would be a good idea to jump in and get the second
one started so I could work them up (nearly) together – especially since the
heel technique is new to me.   This way,
I can do the figure out the first heel and then do the second one while it is
still fresh.  Since I am working the
socks with three sizes of needles, I can keep the smallest set in the first
sock while I am doing the top of the second sock (with the larger, then the
middle sized needles).  And now that I am
comfortable with the leafy lace pattern, I can chug along fairly quickly on it –
so I can wait until I have a good quiet daytime hour (or so!) to focus on the
heel without having to bring progress to a halt altogether because I can keep
doing the lace knitting in the evenings.

And, truthfully, the best reason for starting the second
sock while I am still fresh and enthusiastic and have delusions of completing
the project in time to win the Gold is that I always get hung up on the second sock.  It languishes.  So, the further along I can be on it before
the inevitable happens, the better my chance of getting the pair finished.  Knitter, know thyself!

The Olympic Games coverage continues to be both inspirational
and distracting!  Last night, I got
caught up in Apolo Ohno’s race and started knitting back around the wrong way
on my sock.  Tonight, I am emotionally
rocky over Sweden’s trouncing Finland in men’s hockey.  I do my best knitting during curling.
