I love autumn! It is my favorite time of year and I get energized and inspired as the days mellow. I am already thinking fondly of boots (and, dear me, I should finish my Bronze Socks to wear with my boots!) and sweaters (okay, the Humble Cardigan is slowly growing…) and tams (fortunately, I have two nice serviceable tams and do not need to think of knitting any others…certainly a blue tam and a rust-and-gold tam should cover all fashion needs…and one would not need one in a different color…say, forest green or, better yet, cream with forest green Fair Isle patterning…no, no, one would not need that…).
Since George and I were road-tripping to Eastern Washington last weekend (to deliver Geoff to Gonzaga Univ. and visit Sasha who has juts started grad. school at Wash. State Univ.), I decided to start a fall project: Cape Christmas. Wine “Gloss” yarn from KnitPicks (merino/silk) done up in 3 cable-ish patterns – the main one being a branch design featured on a sweater in Vogue Knitting’s Early Fall edition. I chose 2 other patterns to complement the angular branch design – one runs along the hem of the cape and the other borders the front edges. The bottom of the cape measures 78” (hopefully! I mean, at least according to my calculations it should) and I cast on 314 stitches. There will be a brioche collar in Blackberry “Gloss,” Cream “Gloss,” and Sherry “Suri Dream” (Suri alpaca/wool/nylon).
I cast on as we drove out of Tacoma Saturday morning – and pretty much worked on this project exclusively the entire drive. This is what 700 miles of knitting looks like:
As you might guess from the piece’s name, I hope to be wearing Cape Christmas during the Holidays. This year. We may have to go back to Eastern Washington a few times!
