Summer seems to have simply worn herself out and collapsed in a dusty heap. It is Autumn’s duty to step in, of course, but I think she will merely be aping her older sister’s dreary warmth for a while – I see no hints of Autumn splendor.
But the swallows are gone and so I know that Winter is coming.
Summer came late this year and lingered – perhaps my knitting reflects that! I have just blocked the butterflies for my Butterfly Q’mitl (which was to have been a summer garment). I can sew it up tomorrow if the fat little bodies are dry. Then, I have to knit on the lace edging. Which is where I am on my Gull Pi Shawl (another summer piece!). About 16 more points to go (16 rows per point).
Last weekend, it rained and though the weather was warm, I jumped on the momentary inspiration to start Max’s jacket and Gwen’s jumper. I had bough the yarn at (the much lamented) Lamb’s Ear Farm’s going-out-of-business sale in the spring – forest green tweed & pistachio tweed (Cascade Yarns) with a vague “Hansel & Gretel” thought in mind. I am using the boy’s “Hansel” cardigan (tho I think the styling is more Bavarian-jacket-like) form Fairy Tale Knits (Alison Stewart-Guinee) and the girl’s “Heidi” jumper from (the oh-so ancient, but lovely) Kids’ Knits (Lesley Anne Price). I am mostly following the patterns as written (with a few little adjustments).
The baby knitting continues (I am reminded of the psalm that speaks of our being “knit in our mother’s womb”!) and little Owen is two months from his due date. I have 2 blankets, a hat, a pair of socks (not actually begun), and a pair of trousers in the works for him. So, in the evenings I am bouncing between lace shawl points, a Heidi jumper, a blue baby blanket of my own devising….
