I am much more comfortable writing about knitting than about
technology. But I have a new iPad and am learning how to use it — and
am typing my blog post on it as I speak, er, write, er type.
I love my iPhone and have admired the ease with which my iPad-ing family
members done computer-y stuff from the comfort of the couch. I figured I
could make the jump and so I used my Christmas money early and took the
plunge.
I totally find the iPad space-age cool (what they always told us a
computer could be). However, I am not particularly space-age cool —
and it is taking me a while to get the hang of it all. Like this super
touchy virtual keyboard. I keep slamming the wrong keys and have done
battle with the shift function multiple times. I hit return when I mean
to hit backspace and jump to the numerals/symbols keyboard when I intend
to hit the space bar….
And the iPad keeps giving me helpful suggestions (in little bubbles) for
what I might be trying to say – rather like a misguided but
well-meaning spouse.
Surely I will get better at this. Wrap my brain around the new word
processing procedures and functions. Manipulate photos. Hook into
resources like magic. Wield god-like powers with elegant swipes of the
fingers.
It is just going to take some time. And some dedication. And probably a
good deal of bumbling. And some god-like patience with myself.
Just like knitting!

I am in love with my iPad now that I am getting the hang of it. Having gotten it for free makes it even better though I am already thinking of a better one…I guess I can’t hope to win that one!
