I am designing a loose drapey vest based on traditional counterpane patterns — and knit with bright poppy linen yarn! Claudia Hand-Painted.
It will be done in components — just like a counterpane would be. And I started in on my first square last week. It is interesting as it is knit from the outside in — that is, you cast on the outside edge stitches and decrease on alternate rounds as you go until you finish in the center.
So, I cast the 192 stitches (using a chain cast-on) onto a small circular needle and joined it into a circle without (I thought) twisting. Really, I studied it sooooo carefully! Lots of stitches scrunched together and the fresh bouncy linen yarn was wily on the slippery needle…well, I was pretty darned sure I had it. No twist. So, I knit along and knit along, round after round — checking every now and then to see if there was a twist. No twist. The number of stitches decreased and the work settled and spread out on the needle and really was starting to look like a square..
And then last night:
You see it down there at the bottom right? Like Mick Jagger's tongue! Aughhhh!
Well, of course there was nothing to do but pull it out.
And I confess that I had been a little uncertain about this pattern (Rosemary Sprigs) anyhow as it did not seem to be showing up very well in the red yarn — tho it might be more distinct when it is done & blocked, of course. Anyhow, I decided to go ahead with a different pattern square (Swirling Stars):
It is going very well and I am pleased! So, onward!
And if I do come back to the Rosemary Sprigs, I will cast it onto a longer needle and get it sorted properly that way!
