Awkward Knitting Question of the Day:
“That’s not regular knitting, is it?”
How do you answer that? I was working on my Inversion Cardigan in Blues at the time — 3 different yarns (in 3 different weights) and 3 different stitch patterns. Fancy stuff, no doubt. But is it “not regular knitting”? I mean, I was using needles and it is all just variations of knits and purls, of course.
I stammered something about it being different stitch patterns, but all based on knit stitches — which, if she didn’t know anything about knitting (and given her question, I’m guessing she didn’t) was probably not very enlightening.
I think she was trying to be kind and show some interest — and I believe she was complimenting my work…but it was kind of an impossible question to answer. She followed it up with ( the more usual, but also difficult to answer) “Is it hard to learn?” Throwing my hands into the air (metaphorically — after all I was knitting at the time), I gave a waffling “Not really” and (because Sarah and I have an agreement to shamelessly promote ourselves) I followed that up with a half-hearted “I teach knitting.”
Well, it was all very awkward — for me, at least. I mean, what is “regular knitting” anyhow?!
