Occasionally, someone offers us some yarn — and we are always delighted to add some interesting skeins or even small balls of left-overs to our stash. A warm thank you to those of you who have done so in the past — and do keep us in mind whenever you are in a stash cleansing state of mind!
But the gift of an entire Yarn Stash?!
My niece (actually my nephew's wife) Staci is an accomplished knitter — a gourmet cook, a skilled needlewoman, and an inspired seamstress. Recently, she told Sarah that, due to some hand issues, knitting just did not work for her anymore and that she would like to give us her yarn. Just like that. Such grace and generosity! I stopped by her home and picked it up when we were in Portland last week and…
Such yarn! Staci knows good yarn when she sees it (feels it, sniffs it, whatever…) and appreciates how good quality materials make for good quality product. To put it bluntly, it is all Good Stuff.
The clear bins were all sorted and marked — and the cardboard box held some full projects, as well. Lovely stuff, all of it! Driving home from Portland, I kept looking back at the stack of bins — and, well, I felt like a yarn pirate! And that was before I had even really dug through it all (I waited until I could FaceTime with Sarah!). After we had gone through it all, I thought, y'know, if I had walked through a really, really good yarn shop and pulled whatever caught my fancy from the shelves and tossed it in bags (and I had a pirate crew to carry all the bags), I could not have come out with a better haul.
And not only is it a lot of fabulous yarn, but — as Sarah pointed out — it is yarn that is up for grabs, that has not been purchased for any particular project, that has no appointed mission, no history, no destiny. Maybe that is what makes it feel like "yarn shop" yarn rather than "stash" yarn to us. It is yarn with unlimited possibility!
So, maybe it is not so much as if I robbed a yarn shop (in a morally good way), but like I captured a yarn shop (again, in a morally good way)!
Okay, I should porbably take some deep breaths and go do a little garter knitting to calm myself down.
But, oh, Staci, thank you!
And that concludes A Good Week For Yarn. Epic!
