I realized, the other day, that I am doing last year’s knitting!
Okay, maybe this comes as no surprise to you — familiar as you might be with my process by now — but it was a “lightbulb” moment for me. I mean, I was aware that several of my active projects are ones I began last summer and then set aside when autumn arrived and Christmas Knitting performed its annual eruption — and that I dug them out again once the days became longer than the nights because they suddenly seemed relevant again. The Leaves of Grass Pi Shawl, the EZ Green Sweater (mine is is blue), the Inversion Cardigan (also in blue).
But I suddenly recalled that I had brought the yarn for the Beachy Q’mitl to the Beach last year in hopes of starting that project (it was going to be a cowl/neck sort of thing originally). And then I found myself at The Yellow House yarn shop selecting cotton yarns to make a dress for Gwen — following a conversation I had with Sarah about the cotton dresses we had intended to knit for her last summer. And I had already mentally packed up the Color Block Sweater to take to the Beach this summer (I bought the yarn there last summer….).
Of course, the baby knitting is not from last year — as the babies were not even glimmers yet. And the Marina Circular Scarf is absolutely 2013 trendy.
But a lot of my recent yarn purchases are for pieces I wanted to make last year — which are mostly pieces to replace garments I wear all the time (but which were not hand-knit by me) with pieces that I have knit for myself: a daily cardigan, a drapey jacket, a soft & light-weight & warm stole. Last year’s “to knit” list.
The fact that I am making good progress (this year) on much of last year’s knitting bodes well for the knitting projects from the year before — don’t you think? Get excited! I have an entirely positive spin on it all — now that I think of it not as “catching up” but as Time Traveling!
