I am writing this out on our deck where It is gorgeous and warm — but gusty! Everything is quite still and then there is a great whoooosh among the fir trees to the east and a gust of wind shoots through our backyard dumping fir needles and cones down on us. Ah, summer in the Pacific Northwest!
There are many distractions on our back deck – besides the wind. Airplanes, squirrels, birds, cats, shifting my chair into the sun, shifting my chair out of the sun, bees — and the distractions increase when our grandson Owen is here with us!
In truth, summer is filled with distractions. Which is why I never get as much accomplished as I think I will. Every year. Part of it is our climate. If you live in the PacNW, you know how delightful our gorgeous summer days can be — and how few they are compared to our many, many gray, chill summer/fall/winter/spring days. I think there are state laws here that mandate taking advantage of gorgeous summer days. Or there might as well be! We treat these days like festivals.
Which is why I am out here trying (kinda) to work with all the distractions such as spitting out for needles after that last gust of wind. And why badminton on the front lawn and Pinot Gris on the back deck are taking priority over a lot of other things that can be done inside once the sun goes down (tho, truth be told, the combination of badminton and Pinot Gris somewhat impedes my evening productivity too 🙂
Life is a blessing and a gift — to be enjoyed as much as possible. Life is too short for gorgeous summer days or gorgeous lace silk/alpaca yarn to pass you by, right? So, I am sitting here in the sun (and the occasional confetti of fir tree bits!) swatching up an Estonian lace pattern for a stole — to wrap around my shoulders on those gray, chill summer/fall/winter/spring days to come (it is sure to get a lot of use!).
