Okay, so a fall hat was not on my knitting agenda. Until it poured, poured, poured rain on Saturday and I grabbed one of my smart little knitted tams on my way out the door. I put it on and glancing in the mirror thought “Oooo, that looks skimpy and not at all chic.” Of course. Larger, slouchy hats are in vogue now. So, my smart little tam looks not so smart, merely little. And dowdy.
I don’t like my knitted garments to look dowdy. I guess I fight some of the stereotypes about knitters and hand-knit clothes. Classic is good, out-dated is, well, out-dated. My tams are classic, but that style of classic is currently not in style. So, when I put on the tam and went “Oooo” (not in a good way), I knew that I needed to whip up a larger, slouchier hat. ASAP!
I began stash diving optimistically. Surely, I should have a ball or 2 of thick-ish wool yarn in a pleasing neutral go-with-everything hue, right? But as I mentioned in a previous blog, most of my random skeins are in lace or sock weight. And I was coming up empty.
Then, as I was drifting off to sleep that night, I remembered The Staci Stash! Next morning, I went directly to those bins and voila! Rowan Tapestry (70% wool/30% soybean) in a softly shading cream to taupe. I have swatched up a cable-and-lace stitch and am good to go! (Many thanks, Staci! it is like having a yarn shop in my spare bedroom:)
