For my Fall decorating, I had placed some of my Lenox pieces on the mantle in the living room — figuring they would be both lovely and safe (barring earthquake) there. Well, it turns out that our cat Gerhardt not only enjoys prowling the tops of bookcases, the aquarium, various table tops, and the piano during the night — he also likes to stroll along the mantle. I have one lovely little Lenox dish in bits to prove it!
So, down came the Lenox. Up went a few of those miniature “ghost” pumpkins. But that seemed bland (even with the faux crows). It needed something.
Like a knitted ghost pumpkin! I remembered downloading a free pattern from KnitPicks that had directions for knit and crochet miniature pumpkins. Adorable! So, I hunted up some cream colored yarn (KnitPicks Andean Silk, as it turns out) and a little taupe yarn (for the stem) and poof! A charming (and cat-proof) accent for the mantle.
Since our grandson Owen has been quite taken with pumpkins this season, I made him a little pumpkin of his own (in traditional colors).
The second pumpkin knitted up so quickly that I am thinking of doing a couple more white ones for the mantle.
