I finished my Fir Tree Mitts last night. They are based on The Woodsy Association cuffs designed by Stephanie Dosen (check out tiny owl knits to see more of her fabulous designs! http://tinyowlknits.wordpress.com ). I have made two pairs of her Woodsy designs — so it was clearly time for me to do my own! I based my fir tree on the Spode Christmas dishes tree with its pert branches. And I thought a geometric cuff pattern would give it a classic, sophisticated look. The yarn is KnitPicks palette — colors I happened to have on hand. (Pardon the pun) The bright green is a shade Sarah and I bought by accident — we call it Ooblick Green (and so it is!) and we never thought we would actually use it for anything — but it does come in handy at times! And it looks stunningly fresh in this design, I think.
You will notice that the tree design is asymmetrical and that I reversed the design for the second mitt — making it, um, symmetrical again. It really annoys me when earring pairs, for example, are not mirror image of each other!
Originally these were going to be Christmas mitts with red & black instead of the brown and light green — but I had to use the red to make 2 commissioned poinsettia brooches. I am so glad It worked out this way — now they are wintery (not Christmassy) and I can wear them for a couple of months.
It actually just occurred to me last week that I should stop wearing my own poinsettia brooch now that the Holidays are over. It is lying on my dresser now — looking as gorgeous as ever (I haven’t broken the news to her yet).
