Yesterday was glorious! Around 80 degrees, blue sky, summery. I spent the afternoon knitting on the back deck. Well, I was on the back deck and there was knitting — there was also a 2-yr-old. And bubbles. And a water table and squirt guns. And a swing.
And the 2-yr-old required his Yzma (me) to activate most of these. So there was a whole lot of fun, but not a whole lot of knitting.
Actually, the knitting itself was lazy and not particularly cooperative. It was my Broomstick Lace vest-type-thing. There were games of Guess The Gauge and Do The Math and a Long-Tail Cast-On Marathon — in none of which I distinguished myself, I’m afraid.
Tho I challenge anyone to come up with the right answer to: 4 pattern repeats equals 3″ and each repeat requires 5 stitches and I require 50″ or so…now how many stitches do I cast on? On the first (or second) go while being attacked with bubbles and a squirt gun on the first hot, sunny day of the year.
The answer is 340. But my long tail gave out at about 280. Of course. So I huffed and puffed and pushed the 2-yr-old on the swing for a bit (everyone, when seething with frustration, should have a 2-yr-old and a swing handy!). Then I pulled it out and started over with about a mile of tail. And managed to get the 340 stitches cast on and about half a row knit.
Then the father of the 2-yr-old arrived and the drinks and chips came out and there was a massive squirt gun battle…..
The good thing about knitting on the deck in the sunshine with a 2-yr-old is that later you can curl up in a chair in the living room with your knitting. Knitting waits.
