The Quick Summer Q’mitl (aka QSQ) was conceived when the weather turned hot — too hot for even a (wool) lace shawl. My usual Q’mitls seemed stifling, but I wanted a little knitted something to wear over my ubiquitous JJill Perfect Tanks (I wear these all the time!).
The first rule was: no wool. I was thinking all plant fiber, but a little silk and alpaca snuck in (yarn blends). And my first thought was to use bulky yarn (hence the “quick”), but it was difficult to find wool-less bulky yarns and it occurred to me that puffy yarn insulates anyway. So the yarns are thin and cool.
Way Cool, actually! Frog Tree Pima Cotton Silk (mocha), Classic Elite Canyon Pima Cotton & a tiny bit of Alpaca (taupe), Knit One Crochet Too Cozette Silk/Cotton/ a touch of polymide (cream), Classic Elite Firefly Viscose/Linen (silver), Shibui Silk Cloud Mohair/Silk (brassy gold).
Color-wise, sort of a latte mix with a golden flash!
The stitch patterns I am using are circular in nature. Usually, I choose a motif, a shape to bring cohesion to the piece. Also, nothing too complex — both as a nod to the “quick” and to give the QSQ a light modern look. I plan to use some edgings that are not edgings — that is, circles and scrolls in panels. Again, not fussy at all — and also keeping to the circles theme.
I will probably have to re-name this piece as “quick” is not really its middle (or first) name. The Quintessential Summer Q’mitl perhaps?
