I have mentioned that I was intrigued with Claire Garland’s “Knit The Alphabet” the moment I saw it. Once I had the book in hand, I was even more intrigued and couldn’t wait to try out the patterns.
My grandkids, Max & Gwen, got behind the idea immediately. What kid does not love his/her initials? Gwen requested red for her “G” because that is the color in the photo in the book and she wanted hers to look “just like that.” Usually green is her first choice (it is our favorite color) or maybe pink. But I try not to mess with a vision — and her vision was clearly the photo in the book! Max’s “M” was to be black with orange and red accents. Sarah chose fuchsia and teal for Evelyn. Sonja said Owen would enjoy construction vehicle colors: bright yellow and black.
I finished Gwen’s “G” in time for her to take it back to North Carolina with her. It is reported to me that she sleeps with it on her pillow π
I finished the “M” and “E” this week and sent them to N.C. Perhaps the “O” will be a good First Day of Pre-School present for Owen.
The patterns are not difficult, but there are shorts rows, increases & decreases to pay attention to — and a fair bit of Kitchner-ing too. A bit awkward to work — as the partially stuffed letter parts flop around while one is knitting at a tight gauge on double pointed needles. And the stuffing was tricksy. But all well worth it.
I had a dream last week that I accidentally knit Max’s whole name instead of just the “M” — and was horrified to think I was now going to have to knit all the letters of all the other grandkids’ names!! So relieved when I woke up!
