Have you ever wished that someone would put a yarn store in a specific place — and then it happened!
Picture me at the Oregon Coast for our annual 2-week family vacation. The only yarn store I know of in the area is in Newport (it is in the Pirate Village, so we always call it the Pirate Yarn Store — but it has a different name which escapes me at present…wait, it’s Yarn For All Seasons!). That is about 20 minutes south of Otter Crest (where we have stayed every August for 40 years, btw). North? Nothing. At least not in recent years.
Now, about 15 minutes north of Otter Crest is the Salishan Resort. We usually go to the restaurant there several times. And we visit the shops there once or twice during our stay too. And we actually pass these shops on our way to and from Otter Crest. AND we have been spending Thanksgiving at Salishan for the past 40 years. So, of course, I have often thought “wouldn’t it be convenient and fabulous if there were a really nice yarn shop there?” And now there is!
In The Wind Yarns. It opened about 4 months ago — but looks like it rose from the sea fully grown and absolutely alluring like Aphrodite! Gorgeous yarn — copious amounts, lots of colors, sensibly and attractively displayed. The woman running the shop when I was there was not the owner, but was helpful and friendly (without getting between me and the yarn!) and clearly knitting-savvy. It is everything I love in a yarn shop — well-stocked, sophisticated, bright, spacious. And perfectly placed!
Um, yes, I did do my bit to support the shop. Green variegated Ella Rae Lace Merino Worsted Superwash for a Spring sweater for Sonja’s baby. Sonja picked out some soft as soft can be alpaca & silk yarn in pinky-orange to knit a baby hat (she has the yarn at her house — and I forgot to take a photo of it and I cannot recall the brand of yarn — but trust me, it is fabulous!).
And I selected a Ferocity’s worth of purples in Malabrigo and Mirasol yarns. Don’t know what it will be yet — but either Sarah or I will knit it into something that feels as rich and wonderful as it looks. Ya can’t go wrong with yarn like this!
So, if you are cruising Highway 101 N near Gleneden Beach, Oregon (just south if Lincoln City), visit In The Wind Yarns — it is a gem! I certainly plan to go back again and again.
