The Yarn
It came from Purl Soho in New York City. Whenever I take a trip, I am always open to picking up a little souvenir yarn, of course. And my trip to New York City this summer provided ample opportunity as Manhatten has a veritable buffet of yarn shops. This was a short trip, tho, and (quite frankly) I was lucky to make it to one yarn shop. Sarah — who I consulted by phone — and I selected Purl Soho and it was a terrific choice. Lots of lovely yarn all in a very smart urban shop. I could have gone a bit wild, really — except that it was a smolderingly hot day in the middle of summer in the middle of the city and the humidity was killer and we had been walking all day….and (quite frankly) I could not work up much enthusiasm for wool and alpaca yarns (there was very little in way of summer yarns — silk, linen — tho there was probably some cotton…). I was sweaty and hot and tired and my feet were done (and I was, quite frankly, distracted because we had tickects to see our son Geoff in a lead role in the off-Broadway show Queen of the Night for that evening and I was pretty darn excited aboout that!).
BUT this was my New York City Yarn Shop Experience! So, I rallied as best I could and petted and sniffed and ooooo-ed and hmmmm-ed my way methodically through the shop twice. And since I found myself returning to some delicious Koigu, I decided to go with that. But for what? The only knitted piece that seemed at all useful at that moment was a copious and absorbant handkerchief for mopping up my own sweat.
Well, I reasoned, there was no need to conjure a project at the moment. I would select yarn and figure out what it would become at a later time (when I had cooled down, put my feet up, and regained my senses). And, what was even better, I would get "matching" yarn for Sarah and we would come up with something to knit together! Most Excellent! So, I snatched up 2 skeins of the intriguing variegated Koigu KPM that had been winking at me ever since I came into the shop — and selected a mildly tonal sandy Koigu and a shameless Koigu shaded raspberry-to-burgandy for myself. And a variegated in blues for Sarah — with a light neutral companion and a bright blues-y companion similar to my own set of yarns.
Done! Tune in next time for Part 2: The Pattern
And, by the way, Queen of the Night was incredible and Geoff was fabulous, and (quite frankly) we had a terrific time!
