More thoughts on travel knitting.
George and I are headed to New York City next week to visit Geoff — so I still have travel knitting on the brain. And why do I call it “Mighty Travel Knitting”?
Because there are so many “mights” in traveling with knitting:
I might be able to knit this lace on the plane.
I might not — so I had better bring the simple sweater project too.
I might finish this ball of the sweater yarn, so I should bring another one.
I might get stuck in an airport for 8 hours and be able to finish the entire sweater, so I had better bring all the yarn.
I might have a lot of “sitting around time” anyway, so I need an absorbing project.
I might not, so I had better bring a simple project too.
I might get stuck on one or both or all three projects — so I had better bring a back-up project, one that I can carry in my purse because…
I might get stuck sitting around somewhere when I am not expecting to sit around and won’t have brought along anything but my purse
I might break a needle, so I had better bring an extra set.
I might find some amazing yarn and have the perfect idea for how to use it, so I had better bring several sets of needles in various sizes and a stitch dictionary.
Well, you get the idea!
I also think of the word “mighty” when I think of travel knitting because traveling is pretty epic and it gets me into an epic state of mind. I mean, you fly through the air at incredible speeds and you drive by vast oceans and gigantic mountains and you stay in fabulous cities and visit amazing sites….and everything is epic.
So, my knitting becomes epic. And when I am speeding across the Salt Flats at 80 mph and find an error in my knitting and I know that I could just pack it up and wait til I am home again, I look up at those gigantic mountains and remember the pioneers struggling to cross them with their babies and their Bibles and their knitting bags…and, well, I cannot just give up, fold my hands, and let that project languish! I brought that project to knit in this car on this drive across the Salt Flats and, by gum, I am going to knit on it until we pull into the rental car stall at the Salt Lake City Airport!
Yeah, it gets like that.
