I have the Panicky Doldrums. It is a condition brought about by having too many projects in my brain. The cure is to resurrect hibernating projects (especially ones I am feeling guilty over) and to swatch new projects (particularly ones that are speaking to me in my dreams). This will completely cure the Panicky Doldrums, but, of course, it makes my knitting life ludicrous!
Okay, I should probably say that I HAD the Panicky Doldrums. Until yesterday when I designed and cast on the Ridiculously Happy Yellow Socks and designed and swatched another fingerless glove for my new collection. And then today when I started work on Sarah's Christmas flip-top mittens (which had been teetering on the edge, threatening to slip into hibernation), well, that pretty much blew the Panicky Doldrums out of the water!
Leaving me cured, but dithering about trying to figure our some sane solution for handling 7 knitting projects plus my needlepoint piece — and possibly the 3 hibernating projects that heard all the ruckus and are waking up and trying to join the party.
I seriously considered some sort of circuit knitting program — like the circuit work outs where you spend 3 minutes on one machine then 4 minutes on the next, 2 minutes on the next, etc. Something like 3 rounds of the sock, then 4 rounds on the fingerless glove, then 2 rows of the sweater….
A sensible person might devote one day of the week to each project (the most sensible part of that program being to limit the projects to 7), but I can't see myself pulling off that kind of self-discipline.
So, I will stick to my usual system which is, any given day, to work on 1) what I feel like working on or 2) what I feel I ought to be working on. It is all sort of intuitive. And it will settle into something like the solar system with each project establishing its own orbit — some getting worked on daily, some every few days, some weekly, some floating off to hibernate in outer space for a while. Rather scientific, really. I am feeling less ludicrous already 🙂
