Some people are surprised that I knit in the Summer.  (Okay, people who don’t know me too well — the rest of you know that I am ALWAYS knitting!   Well, not literally, of course, but I am pretty much always in the state of having just done a little knitting or in the middle of doing a little knitting or just about to do a little knitting)  So, yes, I knit enthusiastically throughout the Summer months — cotton sweaters and shawls, lace of all sorts, maybe something beach-y.

The challenge for me is not what to knit in Summer, but when to knit.  Summer is busy!  Here in the Pacific Northwest, we get all besotted with sunshine and long days and warm temperatures — when we can step outside with our first cup of coffee and stay there until the last glimmer fades and we crawl inside to bed (at least, that is how we feel we should be living in Summer and we do our darndest to do so!).

So, we are off to the pool, the zoo, the park, the beach….We play lawn games and linger on patios with the beverage of our choice…We go to baseball games and soccer matches….We go visit out-of-town family so we can play outside with them too!…And we are constantly hopping into cars, onto planes, into boats, onto trains….

This is why I have a caravan of knitting bags lined up ready to go.  For our trip to Reno to visit Sasha and Dave, I had plane-friendly knitting that was also heat-friendly too (cotton and linen, no wool).  For poolside and beach knitting,  a nice waterproof bag.  Simple, plain knitting for lively conversations or exciting ballgames.  Lace knitting for road trips.  And, always, a bag I can grab on my way out the door when I do not know what the day might offer!

My newest addition to the fleet is a rolly cart that I can wheel around the house or out onto the deck!  This is for design projects which involve books, pads of graph paper, pencils and such, files — as well as yarns and needles, of course!  So I can keep on task even when the sunshine calls or the Mariners are playing a day game — or if life is too lively, I can roll into my study and shut the door, put on my smooth jazz station, and just work 🙂

So, I am able to keep knitting through the Summer days.

And at the end of the day?  A bag of knitting follows me to bed.  Because after all the sunshine and activity, nothing soothes like a long row of lace 🙂
