What makes for an ideal beach knitting project?  Something portable and simple that does not require a chart or printed instructions that must be referred to frequently — no cable needles (yikes! How quickly could I lose that in the sand?!).  A few color changes are okay — best if done in chunks, though, so you don’t’ need to haul around many balls of yarn.  A good basic wool yarn.  Something you can pick up easily and put down quickly (in case a tiny grandchild is headed to the waves or someone wants to start up a game of Molkky — a Finnish stick-throwing game which we played almost daily on the beach!)

In short, exactly what makes for an ideal camping knitting project.  (Except that it is easier to shake sand out of your knitting than those little forest-y bits that accumulate in it during a camping trip). So, illitilli’s Ribbon Wrap — Sarah’s and my chosen camping project — followed me to The Beach with happy results.

We had some productive group beach knitting too!

And now that I am home again — what do you think makes for an ideal project for knitting at the grandkids’ soccer games?  Exactly!

And this Winter when I am cozy-ing up in my wooly wrap, I think I will find I have caught a little bit of Summer in the stitches 🙂 Some campfire smoke, some salty ocean breezes, sunlight, and soccer field grass — and probably a few of those forest-y bits too.
