I have been trying to write about “End of Summer Knitting” — which could be read either as “End-of-Summer Knitting”or “End of Summer-Knitting”….and if I stop to ponder which I will never get on with this post! Which is pretty much the reason why I have not gotten around to writing a post over the past few weeks. Distractions!
It is like when you walk past your garden and see flowers blooming and think “Hmm, wouldn’t it be lovely to cut some and bring them into the house?” But you don’t. You carry the groceries into the house and put them away and then go about whatever it is you do next and forget about the flowers. Until you pass your window a few days later and think “Hey, I should go cut some of those flowers and bring them into the house!” But you don’t. You go take a shower or write an email or fold towels…and forget about the flowers until you are lying in bed at night and think “Tomorrow I will go out and cut those flowers and bring them into the house.” But then tomorrow comes and — guess what? — you don’t. Because it rains or your son calls or you get caught up reading the end of that mystery or ….well, you get the idea. Then, one day, you actually go out to cut them — and half of them are withering and the ones you cut immediately shed their petals. You missed it.
So, on this quiet almost-Autumn morning, I am bound and determined to address my Summer Knitting! I am also bound and determined to finish up my Summer Knitting (rather than pack it away until next Spring!) because I AM SO CLOSE TO DONE!
My Mermaid Sweater just needs the sides sewn up and the lower ribbing knit. And since it is a sturdy cotton-wool blend yarn, I will be able to wear it in the coming months over long-sleeved t-shirts.
The Ribbon Wrap shawl (my beach knitting!) will translate into Autumn/Winter Knitting as it is a hearty wool piece.
My Cotlin (KnitPicks yarn — the Reflections collection — of cotton/linen) rectangular color-block shawl is on hold because I realized that I have only half the amount of yarn I need! I designed it and began knitting it, but realized that the stripes were not as tall as they should have been — because I had written “10 R” (for example) for 10 Ridges (in garter stitch, 2 rows are needed to make 1 ridge — so that would mean I should knit 20 rows) but I had been reading it as 10 Rows! (Note to self: ALWAYS write down what your abbreviations mean on the pattern!) Anyhow, some of the colors are on backorder. So, this will be a nice Winter or Spring project 🙂
The Edie short-sleeved cotton sweater is nearly done — the last rows at the hem and then the little sleeves. This one is sheer Sisu (Finnish stubbornness) at this point because I cannot imagine wearing it until late next Spring! But it is SO CLOSE to done that I am going to persevere.
My modular shawl — which is made from a single 929-yd ball of Concentric Cotton Yarn — is down to the lower border. It will be done when the yarn is all used up!
So that is the Summer Knitting report! Now, I confess that I have already been dabbling in some Autumn Knitting (with the wildfire smoke here in the PNW we are stuck indoors and it has been pretty depressing…so fresh knitting was called for!), but I am making progress on these last projects of Summer and maybe there will yet be some warm (smoke-free!) hours of deck knitting as we move through September 🙂
