For Sarah and me, the week before Halloween is traditionally given over to sewing rather than knitting. Sewing Halloween costumes! Some years we get super inspired and very elaborate — and kinda driven! Last year we costumed Sarah’s family as characters from “Nightmare Before Christmas”! This year we are at an ebb — one “ghostie” costume (3-yr-old Julian) and a little work on an Enid (from the “Wednesday” series) costume for Evelyn.
Julian loves to walk around the house with his “Yzma blanket”** draped over his head — we call him the “green ghostie” — and so when he wanted to be a “ghostie” for Halloween, we knew he would want his head draped. But his mom worried about his ability to navigate with his head covered (he is, after all, only 3!). So, Sarah and I were called upon to create a “ghostie” costume that would meet everyone’s criteria.
Wr found a fabulous fabric that was sheer, a bit weighty, and white — and it had dark hand shadows to make it especially spooky! We made the costume with a veil that could drape over his face (he could see through it) or lie down his back if he preferred to have his face clear. It flutters nicely when he runs! He was a little nervous about it at first (have I mentioned that he is only 3?), but his cousins put it on and convinced hi that it was cool! So, success!
The Enid costume only required me to sew faux fur around the neckline, cuffs, and hemline. White faux fur on a white sequined fabric! I was nearly snow-blinded!
But that has been accomplished in time for Halloween — and a couple of pre-Halloween events.
And actually, Sarah and I have been knitting through it all :)
**My grandkids call me Yzma — and I have knit a blanket for each one. These are referred to as Yzma Blankets.
