The time comes for even the most fickle knitter to focus on a single project. And this is one of those times for me because I have a Deadline! Not my usual type of Deadline — Christmas, a wedding, a baby — but a commissioned piece which our client would like to have for a specific event. Sarah and I are designing and knitting this piece together, so we are both devoting all our knitting time to this project. (We are knitting it in sections that will be seamed together) And we keep assuring each other that we are “getting there” on the section currently on our needles.
So, I am averting my eyes from my usual knitting buffet — at present, a simple sock, a sock with interesting construction, 2 summer shawls that are nearly done, a sweater, and a wooly shawl that only needs to have its many yarn ends woven in. And I will not even let myself daydream about my Fall projects (tho I occasionally squeeze a delectable yarn skein and sigh like a Victorian maiden…).
Now, before you start to feel sorry for me, I hasten to say that this project is exciting and full of variety — as we incorporate multiple stitch patterns and a range of yarn colors into anything we design. There is certainly the thrill of swatching as we develop each section: the crushing blow when the stitch pattern I was so enthusiastic about looks like a muddy footprint when knit in the yarn I was planning to use and the rapture when the combination of stitch pattern and yarn is gosh darn exquisite!
And there is really nothing like the joy of creating a unique garment for someone who has trusted their vision to your creative process. So, really, Sarah and I are having a terrific time — in spite of sidelining our other projects (along with any domestic duties we can ditch) — and I look forward to sharing the finished project with you. Meanwhile, here is a sneak peek at the section currently on my needles 🙂
