Without getting into all the controversy over internet knitting events and the Olympics (esp. the Ravelry situation), I will say that Sarah & I have an Olympic Games-related knitting project going.  And we call it our “Synchronized Knitting (whether or not it is sacrilegious to dub it thus!).

It came about because I was enthralled with Jared Flood’s “Leaves Of Grass” circular lace shawl.  I bought the pattern and started exploring yarn options.  I decided on Tosh Merino Light and asked Sarah to help me choose a color.  Well, in the course of cruising websites oohing and ahhing over the myriad of hues, Sarah became enamored of the project and decided that she wanted to knit one too!

We had checked out Ravelry projects and thought the ones in fairly solid vivid colors were most striking – and we ended up selecting Maple Leaf (mine) which is brilliant yellows leaning to apple greens and Pop Rocks (hers) which is brilliant hot pink!

The yarn arrived on Friday – the day of The Olympic Opening Ceremonies. And as they got underway, we got all fired up and caught up in the fanfare and excitement and all – and suddenly we were winding our Tosh yarn into balls and swatching and beating our breasts and crowing about how fabulous it would be to knit up our lace shawls during the Games!

For some, The Olympics inspire flag-waving or bike-riding.  For us, The Olympics inspire the knitting of enormous lace shawls!  Herculean achievement takes many forms.

I will look forward to seeing your progress and the finished projects. I am very close to finishing my Wingspan and am already thinking about what other colors I would use if I did it again…
