Not all my fall knitting is baby knitting — or leftover summer knitting! — it is actual fall knitting. For example, I am knitting a scarf. You would think that after all my years of knitting, I would have armfuls of scarves, but I really only have a few. And even in our mild climate scarves are really quite useful. So, when I saw the Simple Sideways Triangle Scarf featured on Churchmouse Yarns & Teas (http://www.churchmouseyarns.com/products/simple-sideways-triangle-scarf#.Uh4_P8u9KSM) I thought “hmm, that looks like a really useful scarf” — and since I have this obsession with simple garter projects, I downloaded the pattern and ordered some Tosh Merino Light yarn (for which I also have an obsession, apparently!) — both “Plaid Blanket” and “Stephen Loves Tosh” since I couldn’t decide between the two (and both would make good scarves and I could certainly use two good scarves and garter is so quick to knit…. yeah, well….).
There are several ways to wear this narrow triangle scarf — which was what sold me on it. And the directions were pretty simple: a 4-row garter with yarn overs near the selvedges — the left edge increasing and the right edge staying even. I began working it, but was not happy. The edges looked sloppy and the yarn over holes did not come out large enough look like anything. I’m afraid I did not take a photo before I sighed deeply and ripped it out (you’ll just have to take my word for it). I still liked the concept, but decided that Chain-Garter Selvedge edges and a faggot instead of a plain yarn over hole would make me happier. They did! It is still a nearly mindless project — 4-row pattern with the same angle of increase on the left side. But prettier, I think, and cleaner. I am considering writing it up as a free pattern, if anyone is interested.
