Yes, I said "who" not "what"!
Spring knitting simply becomes Summer knitting — an imperceptible transition unlike that which happens between other seasons. So, it is completely natural for me to be carrying familiar knitting into the Summer months. But why does it seem like I am knitting the same pieces I knit last Spring/Summer and the Spring/Summer before that? Okay, we all know me and it is true that some pieces get set aside as the season ends to be brought out afresh the next year….but why do even my newest projects seem like past projects reincarnated?!
Then, I realized that just as each knitting project has a personality, there are familiar knitting project personality types! Rather like the characters in 70's sit-coms or the casts of my favorite mystery series. So, I am not knitting the same piece, but the piece I am knitting is a kindred spirit to the piece I knit last year!
Let me tell you who I am knitting this season.
The Princess
She is as demanding as she is lovely, as delightful to pick up as she is a relief to set down. She does not like to share attention — so she is not the project to pull out while I am engaged in conversation or watching a movie. She will let me have one small glass of wine, but no more π She may take months to complete… but she does not care! And, really, she is so charming and pretty that I do not mind either.
This year, my Princess is the lace edging of my Springtime Q'mitl. It is an exquisite leafy lace pattern knit in an equally exquisite silk/mohair yarn that will not tolerate rough skin and which flails about in the lightest breeze. I love it! But can usually manage only short audiences with Her Highness.
Over the next blog posts, I will introduce the rest of my Spring/Summer companions!
