I came out of our Cable Knitting session at the Jimmy Beans Retreat with a sweet “pie crust’ cable rectangle in ballet pink.  The idea  was to make fingerless mitts out of the class swatches.  I admit that 1) I was a little concerned that there was not quite enough yarn for 4 cabled pieces (cables eat up a lot of yarn — which is why they are so delightfully squishy) — and 2) I needed some other color(s) to punch up the pink!

So, I bought a skein of Tosh Vintage in “Frontier Stars” ( a gritty wash of mint green with earthy splats of brown, gold, deep green, a wormy shade, and — ballet pink!).  I knit a second pie crust piece in pink.  Then I searched out a mock cable pattern (less bulky than true cables — flatter too)and made up 2 rectangles to the same dimensions as the pink ones.

To make it all a bit more cohesive, I knit the lower cuffs of all 4 in pink and the upper cuffs in the gritty green.  I sewed them up, leaving a thumb whole on each.  Voila! Some very offbeat gritty pinky fingerless mitts!  They can be worn with either the pink side or the gritty green side on the back of the hand too — I love a little versatility in my knit garments!

Photo time!

A cable knit for a fingerless glove is an excellent idea! It also looks terrific.
