The rains have come! Time too get cozy with my wool knitting 🙂
Linen and cotton are fabulous for Summer — both to knit and to wear — but I am ready for my dear old friend wool now. And, fortunately, I have a goodly supply laid in for Autumn! I have cast on a couple of new projects, but am also bringing out the wooly projects I set aside when the weather got warm.
One of the pieces that I am particularly excited about is the “Marta” vest from 52 Weeks of Easy Knits (Laine Publishing). This vest, designed by Sidsel Grau Peterson, is worked sideways in garter stitch — and then embellished with embroidered lines. The original vest is knit with cream colored wool yarn and embroidered with pink, brown, and green DMC floss. Very pretty and classic.
But I envisioned rich color (no surprise!) and wanted to use Spincycle Yarn’s Plump in the color way “Castaway.” So I did!
The question was what to do about the embroidered lines? What would show up in this riotous mix or colors?! I thought about black DMC floss and began investigating online. In the course of scrolling I came upon metallic embroidery floss — YES! I am working the lines in silver and gold.
Weaving the strands through the garter stitches is a meditative process — now that I have it figured out. I have to watch what I am doing, but there is no counting and it is really just a matter of following a line of stitches.
One of the thrills of tromping off the beaten path is seeing how it all comes together! I will keep you posted — and I hope to have my vest ready to wear by the time the weather turns chilly 🙂
